Hernia
What is a hernia? A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall, resulting in part of an abdominal organ or tissue protruding through. The resulting bulge can be painful, especially when you cough, bend over or lift a heavy object. There are several types of hernias that occur in the abdomen and the groin. Depending on the location, these include inguinal hernias, femoral hernias, ventral hernias and umbilical hernias.

Hernias are very common, and your family doctor may refer you to a general surgeon to discuss hernia surgery. At your consultation appointment your surgeon will assess your hernia, and may recommend surgery if your hernia is causing you pain, enlarging, or if it becomes incarcerated, meaning you are unable to push the hernia back into the abdomen.
